Smart Hacks: Waterproofing Your Home for the Rainy Season

By kriz

The Philippines has always been known for its storms that are never without strong winds and floods. That’s why waterproofing your home is essential. Learn the simple and smart hacks to preparing and helping your home weather the storms of the rainy season.

The Importance of Waterproofing Your Home

Experts on fortune and feng shui say that water, especially at the entrance of a home, invites good luck and prosperity. But water getting into the main structure of your home can mean the exact opposite. Water rots wood and may also damage concrete. Your home’s foundation and structure may weaken, and this may lead to either high repair bills, or worse, hazardous accidents and scenarios.

Before the rainy season hits, be sure to schedule a mini check-up and waterproofing session for your home. Check out these smart hacks on how to go about it.

Smart Hack #1: Do Regular Check Ups

How do you keep water from getting into areas in your home where it shouldn’t be? First, you do a regular, round-the-house check up for damaged surfaces or walls. Cracks and leaks are the few passageways for water. Prioritize these areas in your check up:

Roof

Start with your home’s first line of protection against water damage: the roof. Make sure that skylights and plumbing vents are properly sealed. The excellent condition of your roof is the main prerequisite for a waterproof home. Check that all the openings for pipes, wires, and ductwork in the roof area and underneath your home are well sealed.

Prime Tip: Check on your roof a month before summer to have enough time for any necessary repair.

Gutters

Clogged waterways may cause water to reach and wreak havoc on your structures. When the downspout is clogged, water may pool in the gutters, spill over and run down your exterior wall, causing excessive dampness and even internal leaks.

Leaves and debris are obstructions that may block the drains and the downspout. Keep the leaves, troughs, and the drain pipes clean with this short list of keep-in-minds for the gutter:

  • Remove dead leaves and branches from the shingles
  • Scoop debris from the gutters
  • Hose down small debris and let it drain down the downspout

Apart from keeping the waterways clean, make sure that the drain pipes are kept in tip-top condition, or that rusty, damaged ones are replaced.

Foundation & Exterior Walls

Aside from checking for cracks and leaks, make sure that your walls are regularly coated with substances that are formulated to reinforce concrete’s durability against water and the elements.

Smart Hack #2: Do Necessary Repairs

After you’ve pinned down areas that need improvement, make a clear action plan on addressing them.  Trace leaks towards their source and repair cracks by sealing them off.

Prime Tip: Read up on the different types of sealants for cracks and surface damages. Caulk is best for masonry, while hydraulic cement is best for larger gaps. Using the right product for the job ensures a long lifespan and effectively keeps water away.

Smart Hack #3: Enlist a Pro’s Help

You don’t have to get your hands dirty, especially if your waterproofing repairs and upgrades are beyond basic. Call an expert in! Sure, doing it all by yourself is more budget-friendly, but calling for pro’s advice and help may be seen as a wise investment. Water damage restoration professionals should give you an accurate plan and efficient action on what needs to be done to waterproof your home.
